MPAs and climate change : Island Adaptation

It is vitally important for strategies to combat global warming of island territories to take into consideration the impacts of climate change and the marine and coastal resources to be protected. To keep the ecosystems healthy, islands should create new networks of marine protected areas and build up the existing networks whilst adapting their management techniques to their environment.

In order to draw up adaptation reports that are of benefit to each group of islands, the IUCN takes into consideration:

The ultimate aim of the project is to produce a report that sets out which initiatives the island territories can adopt in order to manage their marine protected areas sustainably and effectively. To ensure that each island state has access to this report, communication events are organised, with the goal of optimising the management of MPAs in every part of the world.
