Protection of the Bactrian Camel

This project seeks to protect the Bactrian Camel, a species considered "critically endangered" by the IUCN. This extraordinary animal is the only mammal that is able to drink salt water.

Chinese and international scientists are working together on this project in order to understand the impact of desertification on the habitat, water and food resources of the wild Bactrian camel.

The project has resulted in the creation of a large protection zone in the Gobi Desert, in which 650 camels have already been spotted. A new protection zone in the Mongolian Desert should be set up soon.
