Resounding success for the sixth « Monaco Private Label » Summit
The sixth annual Monaco Private Label (MPL) Summit was held on 16, 17 and 18 March 2018 in Palm Beach, Florida. It was initiated by Michel Bouquier, Technical Advisor to Jean Castellini, Minister of Finance and Economy of Monaco, and brought together over 230 investors from 27 countries.
For this first edition organised outside of Monaco, the members of the MPL Club were invited to a roundtable discussion on innovation and new technologies, in the presence of Dr. Ilhami Aygun, President and CEO of SSI Monaco, the satellite operator of the Principality of Monaco, Jérôme de Bontin, representing Mékar Financial Services, Dipender Saluja and Ion Yadigaroglu, representing the Capricorn Investment Group, Erich Sixt, CEO of the Sixt Group, and Sébastien de Halleux who came to present Saildrone, a project involving drones powered by the wind and sun. The conference broke for a lunch debate hosted by Jean Castellini.
H.S.H. Prince Albert II attends RUG meeting in Colombia
On 19th March, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco participated in the meeting of the Reference User Group (RUG), held in Santa Marta, Colombia.
"Year after year, your work enables us to draw the world's attention to the very serious phenomenon of ocean acidification. … It is now just 10 years since the Declaration of Monaco first alerted the world to this issue. … I should also like to underline the opportunity presented in 2018 by International Year of the Reef. Because of their vulnerability to acidification, because of their importance in our global ecosystems ... corals should today, more than ever, be at the heart of our strategies," the Sovereign Prince announced during his speech.
24th meeting of the Foundation’s scientific committee
On 2nd March 2018, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco welcomed the members of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s Scientific and Technical Committee which convened for its 24th meeting in the Principality.
The meeting focused primarily on the examination of twenty-four new projects concerning Climate Change, Biodiversity and Water, which, following the opinion of the Scientific and Technical Committee and the potential approval of the Board of Directors on 22nd June 2018, may be offered the Foundation’s support.
S.A.S. le Prince Souverain appelle à la protection des mers contre les pollutions plastiques
Mercredi 28 février 2018, S.A.S. le Prince Albert II de Monaco était l’invité d’honneur de la Conférence annuelle du Grantham Institute de l’Imperial College de Londres. Devant un parterre d’étudiants et de scientifiques, le Prince Souverain a rappelé que « le monde doit prendre des mesures urgentes pour combattre les effets dévastateurs du plastique sur les mers et océans de la Planète ».
Official launch of the candidacy of the « Mediterranean Alps » for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Italy.
On Friday, 24 February, in Cuneo, the Minister for the Environment Gian Luca Galletti formalised the candidacy of the "Mediterranean Alps", the application file having been lodged with the Unesco Secretariat in Paris by Italy’s Minister a few weeks previously.
Elected representatives of the municipalities concerned (the candidate territory includes 79 municipalities, of which 28 are in Italy), all the Directors of the Italian Parks, the region’s parliamentarians and representatives of France and Monaco were present.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation signed a financial agreement with SMILO on Thursday the 1st of February 2018 in Bonifacio
The Foundation committed to supporting the thematic of waste management in small islands. A financial agreement was signed with SMILO (Small Islands organisation) to provide concrete support for the implementation of good waste management practice in these small islands
Launch of the 2018 edition of « Students on Ice »
Created in Canada fifteen years ago, the “Students on Ice” programme offers young students the opportunity to take part in an educational cruise every summer where they come into contact with the realities of the Arctic region and discover how it is evolving.
Over the past 11 years, thanks to a partnership between the Office of National Education, Youth and Sports and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, two students from the sixth form in the Principality are selected each winter to take part in “Students on Ice”.
The 2018 selection process was launched on 2nd February 2018 at the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier in Monaco, in the presence of HSH the Sovereign Prince.
Aimed at selecting two new winners, the focus of this year’s contest is “Life without plastic”.
On this occasion, the winners of the 2017 edition, Miss Léa Collange, and Miss Célia Benkerrache, shared their experience whilst Mr Geoff Green, the Founding President of “Students on Ice”, presented the programme for the 2018 mission.
Finally, the Sovereign visited the exhibition entitled “Climate Change in Lapland – what can we do?” accompanied by Stéphanie Lefrère, Curator of the exhibition. The exhibition is located in the hall of the Auditorium at the Lycée technique.
HSH Prince Albert II takes part in the World Economic Forum in Davos
The World Economic Forum took place in Davos from 23rd to 26th January 2018 and brought together 3000 participants. 70 Heads of State or Government attended, in addition to 38 leaders of international organisations (including the UN, IMF, World Bank, WHO, WTO and ILO).
Presided over by Klaus Schwab, this flagship event for globalisation, now in its 48th annual edition, was opened by India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
3rd Mediterranean Water Forum in Cairo
The 3rd Mediterranean Water Forum took place in Cairo from 22nd to 24th January 2018.
For information, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME) and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) previously organised a regional workshop with a view to launching this 3rd Forum in Monaco on 11th July 2017.
Monaco, together with Italy, yesterday signed the application for the inclusion of the « the Mediterranean Alps »
On 24 January, the Principality of Monaco, together with Italy, signed the application for the inclusion of the territory known as "the Mediterranean Alps" on the UNESCO World Heritage List. France will complete the tripartite signature on 25 January.
The site which is the subject of the application covers an area of approximately 200,000 hectares.
The candidacy is based on geological values (criterion VIII), and the site’s boundaries, which are part-terrestrial and part-maritime, belong to three States: Italy, Monaco and France.
The Monegasque State is involved by reason of marine access.
HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco Awards the 2018 Prince’s Prize fro Innovative Philanthropy to Douglas WOODRING (Ocean For Recovery Alliance)
Monaco, January 22, 2018 - Mr. Douglas Woodring, Founder and Managing Director of Ocean Recovery Alliance, has been awarded 2018 Prince’s Prize for Innovative Philanthropy by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.
Ocean Recovery Alliance focuses on bringing together new ways of thinking, technologies, creativity, collaboration, and initiatives to help improve the ocean environment.
Villa Girasole more than halved its power consumption between 2005 and 2017
Villa Girasole, the headquarters of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, saw its power consumption drop from 84 to 34.62 kWh/m2/year between 2005 and 2017, i.e. a reduction of close to 60%. These extremely encouraging results place the old building, erected in 1882, in the high energy efficiency buildings category.
